Tony Mokbel 'Fat Tony'
Antonios Sajih 'Tony' Mokbel born 8th August 1965 is a criminal and a convicted drug dealer from Melbourne, who was on the run after fleeing whilst on bail awaiting sentencing. He was recaptured in Athens Greece on the 5th of June 2007. He is of Lebanese descent and born in Kuwait. Detectives from task force Purana allege that he is the mastermind behind the Melbourne amphetamines trade. He has been linked to Carl Williams, as well as the killing of several victims of the Melbourne Gangland war. He disappeared from Melbourne while on trial in March 2006, and was arrested by Greek police in Athens, Greece on 5 June 2007. Prior to his arrest, there was a $1 million bounty for information leading to his capture.According to Victoria Police this reward still stands for the person who tipped off the police on his whereabouts..
Allegations It has been alleged that in late 2002 there was a meeting of more than 10 organised criminals in Carlton . At that meeting it is said that Mokbel was nearly beaten to death by Nik 'The Russian' radev's bodyguard, West Australian Coffin Cheater Troy Mecanti. Andrew 'Benji" Venaimin was ordered by his then close associate, Mick Gatto to take Mokbel to a friendly doctor. In the following couple of weeks Mick Gatto was told that Veniamin and Mokbel became close allies. Radev was the next underworld identity to perish.
He was reported to have paid convicted murderers, Keith Faure and Evangelos $150,000 for the murder of Lewis Moran, the 23rd victim of the Melbourne gangland killings. Mokbel has been investigated by Operation Purana.
He has also been charged with the murder of drug syndicate patriarch Lewis Moran, who was gunned down in 2004 in the front bar of the Brunswick Club in Sydney Road, Brunswick.
Mokbel is also alleged to have laundered over $2 million via a high-profile Melbourne CBD brothel which he purchased through a business associate. One of Mokbel's amphetamine producers also ran a brothel in the Melbourne south eastern suburbs whilst another Mokbel gang member who trafficked large amounts of drugs for Mokbel also ran a brothel.
On 6th of June 2007 it was announced by Greek hoplites that Mokbel had been arrested while drinking hot chocolate in an Athens cafe. He was wearing an "Armani" wig when they captured him. Authorities have reported Mr Mokbel had bitten one of the Greek hoplites when attempting to put him in cuffs
Moran was the son of Lewis Moran and Judy Moran. Mark Moran was his half-brother. Moran attended Penleigh and Essendon Grammer School. He met his future wife, Trisha Kane, at 15 years of age. She is the daughter of Les Kane, a Melbourne a Painter and Docker and reputed criminal who was murdered in his family home on 19 October 1978.
During the 1990s Moran emerged as one of Melbourne's main dealers in party drugs. During this time he had a team of up and coming western suburbs gangsters led by Bluey Watkins and Toofie Abudul running drugs for him.
Moran was reported to have shot Carl Williams in the stomach during an argument on 13 October 1999, giving rise to lengthy violent turf wars known as the Melbourne gangland killings. Alphonse Gangitano and Moran, along with associate Mark John McNamara, were charged over an attack in the Sports Bar nightclub in King Street on 19 December 1995,for which Moran received a term of imprisonment.
Moran was considered by many to be a "dead man walking" and when paroled from prison in September 2001 was allowed to leave Australia due to fears for his life. He later returned to give evidence in the inquest into the death of Gangitano on 20 November which began on 14 January 2002. Moran was suspected in Gangitano's murder. Gangitano was found dead in the laundry of his Templestowe house by his wife in 1998. A coroner found that Jason Moran and Graham Kinniburgh were present during Gangitano's murder in January 1998.]
Murder Pasquale Barbaro and Moran were gunned down on 21 June 2003 at a junior football clinic in Essendon, where they had been watching Moran's young children. On returning to their motor vehicle they were shot dead by a lone gunman.Police feared that the murders would lead to further violence in the Melbourne underworld war Father Joe Giaccobe, a friend of the Moran family performed Moran's funeral. During the service another priest, Father Joe Martins said:
"Any funeral presents a challenge. Obviously, the church does not make judgements about the person. They need the prayers and whatever the church can do for them...They have to answer to God. We will not deny them". Moran's father, Lewis Moran, was unable to attend the service due to incarceration at Port Phillip Prison Authorities refused Moran's request to allow him to be released from prison to attend the service. Lewis Moran was later murdered while drinking in a Brunswick hotel.
On 28 February 2007, Carl Williams pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court of Victoria to the murder of Jason Moran. The actual shooting was done by Victor Brincat with Williams having organised the killing. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on 7 May 2007. Carl Williams was murdered while incarcerated at Barwon prison on 19 April 2010.
Judy Moran was first married to Leslie John "Johnny" Cole, who was shot dead in Sydney drug-related gangland conflict in 1982. Cole was the father of her son Mark Moran (born Mark Cole), who was murdered in 2000.
Moran was divorced from Cole at the time of his death and had begun a relationship with Lewis Moran. Their son Jason Moran was murdered in 2003. Lewis Moran was shot dead in the Brunswick Club in Melbourne in March 2004, at which time Judy and he were estranged.
In June 2009 Des Moran, Lewis's brother, was murdered. Judy Moran was arrested and subsequently charged with being an accessory after the fact.
Moran, married to Judy Moran, was the father of murdered Melbourne underworld figure Jason Moran, murdered in 2003, and stepfather of Mark Moran, murdered in 2000. Moran was a long term associate of Graham Kinniburgh after meeting as workers on Melbourne docks.
// Murder Masked gunmen entered the Brunswick Club on Sydney Road, Brunswick, at approximately 6.40pm on 31 March 2004, driving a Ford Falcon EF XR6 station wagon. Moran ran from his place at the bar, over a poker machine, through a glass window before the gunman caught up with him and shot him twice, the fatal bullet being fired into the back of his head from a few centimetres away. Associate Herbert "Bertie" Wrout was severely wounded but survived the attack.
Keith Faure, his brother Noel Faure and associate Evangelos Goussis were charged with the murder. On 3 May 2006, Faure pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a non-parole period of 19 years for the murders of Moran and Lewis Caine who was killed two months after Moran. Former Kickboxing champ Goussis, 40, of Geelong was found guilty of Moran's murder on 29 May 2008 in the Victorian Supreme Court. Goussis had stormed into the Brunswick Club and shot Moran as he cowered in a corner. Goussis and two others reportedly accepted a $150,000 contract from Tony Mokbel to kill Moran, the Victorian Supreme Court heard. After five days deliberation, the jury also found Goussis guilty of intentionally causing serious injury to Wrout, but not guilty of his attempted murder. Goussis was also convicted of murdering Caine. In February 2009, Goussis was sentenced to a minimum 30 years in prison for Moran's murder.
Mark Moran was the son of Judy Moran and Leslie John "Johnny" Cole, who was shot dead in Sydney on 10 November 1982 during drug-related gangland wars while working for crime boss Frederick "Paddeles" Anderson. His stepfather was criminal Lewis Moran and his half-brother was drug trafficker Jason Moran, both also murdered.
